Celebrating Our 10th Anniversary
It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the inception of the First Nations Northern Housing Conference. This dynamic, innovative and much anticipated event has grown substantially from its humble beginnings in Sioux Lookout where a handful of participants from the Shibogama Tribal Council communities gathered in a boardroom in March of 1999 for the original sessions.
In February of 2003, a consortium of Northern First Nations Tribal Councils came together to launch the inaugural First Nations Northern Housing Conference, of which we are celebrating the 10th Anniversary edition of this year. The event’s success has been recognized beyond northern Ontario and continues to receive accolades from delegates, industry and government on a local, provincial and even national level. Of course the event success is due to the work of the Organizing Committee and the rock solid support of funders such as the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada.
The Northern First Nation Housing Conference is the industry event for both networking and learning. It is where community leaders and housing professionals come together to meet quality suppliers, attend leading edge workshops, and collaborate with their fellow professionals in other First Nation Communities. The 10th Annual Northern First Nation Housing Conference is an important part of the housing industry in Northern First Nations communities.
In honour of this year`s celebration our theme was “A Decade of Building Together”. We took the opportunity to recognize and look back on the impact of this event on the Northern First Nations housing industry and its First Nations Housing Professionals. This event`s main goal has always been to help build capacity amongst First Nation Communities through educating both the Administrative and Technical delegates who attended. Housing leaders utilized the conference to learn the latest technology and solutions as well as network with suppliers and other First Nation Communities.
Community Housing Innovation Showcase
If your community has a completed housing project that you believe may be worthy of recognition please contact your Tribal Council. They can bring your project forward to the Northern Housing Conference Organizing Committee for consideration and nomination. Let us know what you are up to…you never know, your community could be the next recipient of a Community Housing Innovation Showcase at the next First Nation Northern Housing Conference. Good luck!
